Special Notice 3/30/2020:  Both CUMT and WVU are concerned about the status of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) health problems being faced in China and the rest of the world.  The trip’s viability will be evaluated closer to the departure date if health concerns continue. As a result, WVU may cancel our participation in the program.

China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT) was founded in 1909 and is one of the key national universities under the administration of China’s Ministry of Education.  CUMT offers 57 undergraduate programs, 45 master’s programs and 16 doctoral programs.  The summer school program, initiated in 2014, is organized by CUMT's International Higher Education Alliance for Mining, Energy and Environment.

This scholarship program, sponsored by China, allows students from around the globe to learn about mining, technology and geology by studying in Beijing while at the same time meeting Chinese students and professors with similar professional interests.  Students also travel and experience Chinese culture.

CUMT is ranked as the best mining university in China and has a worldwide reputation in coal mining technology and research.

WVU has been participating in the program since 2015.  Thirteen higher education institutions in 10 countries across the world have sent students, providing scholarship recipients an opportunity to meet and develop personal and professional international relationships. Students from Australia, Austria, Germany, and others have participated in the past.
